Shantyboat – Rediscovering a River Way of Life screened at the Speed Art Museum Cinema in Louisville, Kentucky on June 15th to a packed house. Dianne Steimel’s film chronicles Art and Jerry’s two week journey on the shantyboat, H. A. Hubbard, on the Kentucky and Ohio rivers in September, 2022 as it also shares some a bit of history of shantyboat life in America. The film also tells the story of Anna and Harlan Hubbard, two Kentucky shantyboaters, who established a model for sustainable living at Payne Hollow, Kentucky.
The film is currently in submission to a number of film festivals and not able to be streamed on YouTube. Once it is available on YouTube I will post it here…so watch this space.
Congrats to Dianne who made such a fun and informative movie that importantly helps to revive some lost American history.
I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. After attending college at the University of Louisville, I worked for the Commonwealth of Kentucky providing services to families receiving public assistance. This was a great education for me seeing the poverty that exists in our country and the great disparity in opportunity that exists. I left Kentucky to attend the University of Chicago where I received my Masters in Social Work. After graduating, I worked in the Chicago court system, another important step in my education. I shortly reached a point where I needed a new environment and a fresh start. Looking for something smaller, and not wanting to return to Kentucky (a great place to grow up but not where I wanted to spend my entire life), I narrowed my options to Spokane, Washington and Portland, Maine, having never been to either in my life. I decided on Portland, Maine and loaded all my belongings (not a difficult task) into my Datsun pickup truck. In fact, there was still room to sleep in the back. I headed off to Portland where after one year of working in a group home for teens, I discovered I missed the energy of the big city and migrated down to Boston. In Boston I had the opportunity to work with youth in several settings, the most significant and recent being the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. My career in youth work ended in 2016 and that is when the planning for the Peace Out Road Trip began. I am married to a wonderful woman, Dianne, who supports my dreams, whims and quirks and I have two incredible daughters, Katie & Rebecca, who have been my inspiration for the past 32 years. My other supporter is Dianne's daughter, Lindsey, who often gives me the same bewildering look her mother gives me. I can't blame her. And now I have two grandchildren, Gretyl and Deitrich, who make it very hard for me to be away for long periods on road trips.
